Tangerine is a musical encounter between two worlds that have existed in similar circles, yet never met; Aviv Noam, an Amsterdam-based saxophonist, and Danielle Friedman, a Berlin-based pianist, both originally from Israel. Although they grew up in similar environments, they never discovered their musical chemistry until years later, while individually shaping their artistic careers across Europe.
Formed in 2022, the project grew from a sporadic collaboration in various musical formations, following Friedman’s move to Europe after several years of living and performing in New York City. Through ongoing experimentation and compositional exchange, Tangerine developed a distinctive sound blending Avant-Garde jazz and free improvisation with Western Classical and Middle Eastern influences — intimate, expressive and dynamic.
In early 2024, Tangerine entered the studio and recorded their first demos, which later evolved into their debut EP, Time Without Disasters, released on May 30, 2025. The EP creates a unique cosmos — a colorful universe with its own sense of time and space.
In 2024, Tangerine received a supporting grant from the Amarte Fonds (NL) for compositional and artistic development, contributing to the expansion of their repertoire and the creation of their first fully co-composed music.
Throughout 2025, Tangerine has been actively presenting their music live across Germany and the Netherlands, performing at venues and concert series such as Splendor 323 Impro Series (Amsterdam), Donau115 (Berlin), Blue Note (Dresden), De Pletterji (Haarlem), Orbits Fall series ‘25 (Amsterdam), to name a few.
Their music has been recognized for its emotional depth and expressive originality. Critics have described Tangerine as “not only emotional and familiar but also colorful, euphoric, unpredictable and sometimes even stubborn, as it turned out live,” pointing to the vivid energy of their performances. At the core of the duo’s sound lies an intimate dialogue — “a meaningful journey where sax and piano become each other’s shadows”.
The name “Tangerine” evokes both the enchanting citrus scents of Friedman and Noam’s homeland and the tangential meeting point between their two similar yet different worlds.
